I bet I know what happened on the first paper. He said to himself as he got it, "Another silly paper to do. What probably has to happen? Okay. Just get it done." And he heard not a word of the instructions. I observed Derek's class once. He saw the homework assignments on the board and proceeded to finish them off, not listening to a single word the teacher was saying. It worked for him. The teacher never learned that if she wanted him to listen, writing the assignment on the board ahead of time wasn't going to work.
Additionally, it was an English class and I thought the discussion going on in class was quite interesting and wished Derek would have participated. No incentive to do so, so he didn't.
